Tesla Stock (TSLA) Investing HubLive quotes · official roadmap · US & Canada brokerage guides
Tesla and SpaceX are the two most-watched “Musk stocks” on the Nasdaq. This hub does one thing: sort what a TSLA investor needs by credibility — what is officially confirmed, what is market speculation, and how US and Canadian residents each open an account and handle taxes.

Official roadmap
What Tesla says it will do next: official documents, shareholder votes and Musk’s own words only
Every item carries a source grade. Analyst targets, media leaks and “people familiar with the matter” never make this list. Targets are not promises — Musk’s timelines have a long history of slipping, so read these as direction, not dates.
2025 CEO Performance Award: the official KPIs for the next decade
The hardest roadmap Tesla has: Musk earns 423.7M shares in 12 tranches, and each tranche needs one market-cap step and one operational milestone. Market-cap steps run from $2T to $8.5T. The operational milestones: 20M cumulative vehicles delivered, 10M active FSD subscriptions, 1M Optimus bots delivered, 1M robotaxis in commercial operation, plus eight adjusted-EBITDA steps from $50B to $400B. Vote: 1.89B shares for, 565M against (~77%).
Master Plan Part IV: from “sustainable energy” to “sustainable abundance”
Tesla rewrote its mission as “accelerating the world’s transition to sustainable abundance”, built on three pillars — labor (Optimus), mobility (autonomy / Robotaxi) and energy (Powerwall / Megapack) — unified by AI. The document sets direction only; there is not a single numeric target in it. The numbers live in the award above.

Where the money goes in 2026: capex above $25 billion
Q2 revenue was $28.24B (+26%), but GAAP EPS only $0.32, operating margin 1.4% and free cash flow −$1.09B. The CFO said 2026 capex “will be more than $25 billion” and keeps rising for two to three years, funding Cybercab, Optimus, Semi, Megapack 3 and AI chips. That is the core tension in TSLA today: the car business is bankrolling robots and autonomy.

Robotaxi: unsupervised in 7 metros, but the fleet is tiny
Tesla’s line: unsupervised Robotaxi runs in Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando and Tampa (Bay Area still has a safety driver), ~2.4M cumulative paid miles, 1.48M active FSD subscriptions (+56%). Cybercab entered continuous production at Giga Texas in April 2026 and began paid rides in Austin on Sep 3. The other side, from independent tracking: only 20–30 truly driverless cars are on the road at any time — a long way from the 1M milestone.

Optimus: Model S/X discontinued, Fremont line converted to robots
The last Model S/X were built in early May 2026; the Fremont line took four months to convert into the first Optimus production line. Musk said early output “will be quite slow” and the rate depends on “the least lucky, slowest, dumbest part in the entire 10,000”. A second Optimus factory at Giga Texas is slated for summer 2027, external sales for late 2027. He also conceded that in January 2026 no Optimus was yet doing useful work.
$2B into xAI → converted into SpaceX shares
The non-binding November 2025 proposal to authorize an xAI investment failed on abstentions (1.06B for, 916M against, 473M abstain), yet the board invested about $2B in xAI preferred stock in January 2026. When SpaceX absorbed xAI in February, that stake converted into SpaceX Class A shares — making Tesla a small (<1%) SpaceX shareholder.

Terafab: building “the largest chip fab on the planet” with SpaceX
Tesla and SpaceX announced Terafab in Grimes County, Texas: $16.8B for phase one, a goal of over 1 terawatt of compute per year, at least 3,000 jobs. Caveat: SpaceX’s prospectus described Terafab as only a “general framework” with no binding commitments, and earlier reporting had Intel doing the manufacturing — how this lands is still moving. AI5 has taped out, dual-sourced at Samsung (Taylor, TX) and TSMC (Arizona), volume in 2027.

FSD abroad: Europe country by country, China live in supervised form
The Netherlands’ RDW approved FSD (Supervised) on Apr 10, 2026, followed by Lithuania, Estonia, Denmark, Belgium and Slovenia; EU-wide approval is still pending. FSD (Supervised) went live in mainland China on May 21, full approval pending. FSD subscriptions are the only path to the award’s “10M active subscriptions” milestone, so approval speed abroad matters directly.

Calendar: Roadster reveal Oct 1, Semi and Megapack 3 production this year
The second-generation Roadster will be unveiled on Oct 1, 2026 (production timing unknown); the Nevada Semi plant and Megapack 3 at the Texas Megafactory are both slated to start production in 2026. Nevada approved statewide Robotaxi operation in August. These are “this year” targets — given Musk’s track record, leave room for slippage.

Market view
Will Tesla and SpaceX merge?
Since the SpaceX IPO, “Musk rolls his companies into one” has moved from dinner-table talk to a formal research topic. Below, what has actually been said is kept apart from pure speculation.
What has been said (official / Musk)
- Musk, Q2 call (Jul 22, 2026): “There’s more and more overlap, especially with Terafab… Obviously we can’t talk about combining companies on a call. It’s got to be done with the appropriate process.” Not a denial — a process answer. Electrek
- Musk, All-In Summit (Sep 14, 2026, Los Angeles): “With all this collaboration, on so many levels, who can imagine what action one might take.” His most suggestive comment yet, still not a commitment. Teslarati
- Tesla GC Brandon Ehrhart (same call): earlier this year the companies deepened ties “through an investment and a framework agreement” to work on Terafab, Digital Optimus and similar projects. That is where the official record ends: a framework agreement, no merger process. Electrek
- What has actually happened: SpaceX absorbed xAI in February 2026 (all-stock, $1.25T combined); Tesla owns under 1% of SpaceX; the two are co-building Terafab. Neither board nor any regulator has disclosed any merger process. SpaceX S-1
What the market and analysts infer
- Wedbush (Dan Ives): 80–90% odds the two combine in 2027 now that SpaceX is public — the “holy grail” that lets Musk control the whole AI ecosystem. Yahoo Finance (Jun 11, 2026)
- Oppenheimer: a combination is “plausible” but not imminent — two public currencies serve Musk’s AI ambitions better; expect supply-chain synergies in storage, servers and data centers first. Yahoo Finance (Jun 11, 2026)
- Steven Eisman: wouldn’t be surprised if Musk uses SpaceX stock to buy Tesla, but it is the “last thing” SpaceX shareholders should want — tying the stronger rocket/Starlink business to a capital-hungry, brutally competitive EV market. Yahoo Finance (Jun 11, 2026)
- Structural obstacles (raised across firms): Musk owns ~15% of Tesla economically but holds 80%+ of SpaceX votes, so any deal is a related-party transaction needing a special committee and a minority vote; SpaceX is a defense contractor while Tesla runs a gigafactory in China; SPCX volatility makes an all-stock exchange ratio hard to price. Brokerage guide
How US and Canadian residents each buy TSLA
Brokers, tax-sheltered accounts and reporting rules differ completely between the two countries — don’t copy the other side’s playbook. Here is the shortest path for each; the long-form guides have the detail.
🇺🇸 US residents
- Pick a broker: Schwab, Fidelity, Robinhood and Interactive Brokers all trade US stocks commission-free (IBKR Lite is $0; IBKR Pro charges per share but has the best FX). All four support fractional shares, so a $200/month TSLA plan works anywhere.
- Gather documents: SSN or ITIN, a US address and government ID (passport / green card / driver’s licence). Green card, H-1B and F-1 (with an SSN) holders can all open a regular taxable account — visa status is not a barrier.
- Choose the account type: a taxable individual brokerage account for flexibility; for a long TSLA hold, a Roth or traditional IRA shelters gains, with annual limits and a penalty before 59½.
- Fund and order: ACH from a US bank lands in 1–3 days; buy TSLA with a limit order, never a market order in pre-/after-hours.
Tax and compliance essentials
- You file a W-9 at account opening; the broker issues 1099-B/1099-DIV each year, reported on Schedule D and Form 8949.
- Hold more than one year and gains are long-term (0% / 15% / 20% by income); under a year they are taxed as ordinary income — the gap can exceed 20 points.
- Wash-sale rule: sell at a loss and rebuy the same stock within 30 days (either side) and the loss is disallowed for the year. Dollar-cost averagers who harvest losses trip on this most.
- TSLA pays no dividend, so dividend tax does not apply; neither does SPCX.
🇨🇦 Canadian residents
- Pick a broker: Interactive Brokers Canada (US stocks US$0.005/share, $1 minimum, near-interbank FX), Wealthsimple ($0 commissions but a 1.5% FX fee per USD trade unless you add a USD account), Questrade ($0 stock commissions since 2025). For larger, long-term US holdings IBKR’s FX advantage is the biggest.
- Gather documents: SIN, a Canadian address and ID; PR cards, work permits and study permits all qualify.
- Open the right account first: TFSA first (gains and sales fully tax-free; 2026 room $7,000, cumulative room in CRA My Account), then RRSP (deductible now, taxed on withdrawal), then a non-registered account. High-volatility growth names like TSLA and SPCX belong in a TFSA — a ten-bagger there is untaxed.
- Convert and order: deposit CAD, convert to USD inside the broker (IBKR converts directly; elsewhere use Norbert’s Gambit via DLR/DLR.U to skip the 1.5% fee), then place a limit order for TSLA.
Tax and compliance essentials
- Your broker files a W-8BEN declaring Canadian tax residency so you get treaty rates.
- US dividends in a TFSA lose 15% to withholding (RRSP is exempt) — irrelevant for TSLA and SPCX, which pay none.
- In a non-registered account gains are capital gains with a 50% inclusion rate (the 2024 two-thirds proposal was cancelled in March 2025); track the CAD cost of every lot at the day’s exchange rate.
- T1135: if the cost of foreign property in non-registered accounts (US stocks included) exceeds CAD $100,000, file T1135; TFSA/RRSP holdings don’t count.
Works in both countries: Interactive Brokers (IBKR)
Licensed entities in both the US and Canada (IBKR LLC / IBKR Canada), supports TFSA/RRSP (Canada) and IRA (US), converts currency near the interbank rate from 0.002%, with very low stock commissions. The site owner’s own SPCX sits in an IBKR Canada TFSA.

The questions readers ask most about investing in Tesla
Is now a good time to buy Tesla stock?
Nobody can answer that, including this page. What we can do is lay out the inputs: TSLA trades above 300× trailing earnings, so Robotaxi and Optimus are already priced in; 2026 capex tops $25B and Q2 free cash flow was negative, so auto profits are being reinvested. If you believe the award milestones (1M robotaxis, 1M Optimus) land within a decade, today’s price is a discount; if not, it is a premium. Dollar-cost averaging, spare cash only, and a tax-sheltered account are the three ways to minimise timing risk.
In Canada, should TSLA go in a TFSA or an RRSP?
TFSA first. TSLA pays no dividend, so the TFSA’s 15% withholding drawback on US dividends never applies, while its tax-free sale is worth the most on high-volatility growth stocks. RRSP suits people who have filled their TFSA and want a deduction now. Neither account requires T1135. Details in How to Buy Tesla Stock from Canada.
Can I buy TSLA in the US on an H-1B or F-1 visa?
Yes. With an SSN (or ITIN) and a US address, Schwab, Fidelity, Robinhood and IBKR will open a regular taxable account regardless of visa type. F-1 students should note that in years they are still non-resident aliens under the substantial-presence test they file 1040-NR and capital gains are treated differently.
Can investors in mainland China or Hong Kong buy SPCX?
The SpaceX IPO allocation excluded mainland China and Hong Kong investors (ITAR export-control reasons), and some Chinese-affiliated brokers do not offer SPCX in the secondary market either. TSLA has no such restriction.
Will Tesla split its stock?
No split or buyback has been announced as of September 2026. The last splits were 5-for-1 in August 2020 and 3-for-1 in August 2022. A split changes the share price, not the company’s value; with fractional shares at every major broker, $1 buys TSLA anyway.
How accurate is the price data on this page?
Quotes come from Yahoo Finance’s public endpoint, refreshed server-side every 10 minutes, with roughly a 15-minute delay during regular hours and no pre-/after-hours updates; the chart is from TradingView. Check your broker’s live quote before trading. Market cap multiplies the live price by the last disclosed share count and drifts as that count changes.
