Starlink for Tesla owners: internet at the campsite, the cottage and in the car
This page is for Tesla owners in Canada who keep losing signal where the road trip actually gets good. I run a Starlink Mini on my own Model Y and on my Toronto balcony. Here you get the scenarios, the three steps to sign up, and how to power the dish from the car. Plan and price decisions live on my other site, WeConnectSky, and are linked below.
- 131 MbpsDownload on my Toronto balcony, Starlink Mini (12 Mbps up, 30 ms)
- 25–40 WMini power draw, 60 W peak. Runs from the Tesla 12 V socket, not USB-C
- CA$75Roam 100 GB per month; Residential from CA$75
- CA$140 backReferral reward for you (and for me), cash or service credit; Canada only
When a Tesla owner actually needs Starlink
A Tesla already has LTE for maps and music. Starlink is for the places that LTE does not reach, and for the laptop in the back seat. Four situations where I have used mine.
Camp mode overnight at a trailhead, a provincial park or a Supercharger in the middle of nowhere. The Mini sits on the dash and the whole car has Wi-Fi.
Muskoka, Kawartha, the Laurentians: a Residential plan at the cottage, paused for CA$15 a month in the off season. The car charges on the 120 V outlet while you work.
Rural Ontario, the Prairies, the Interior of BC: if the farm has no fibre, Starlink is often the only real option. It also handles Tesla software updates over home Wi-Fi.
Video calls from a parked Model Y between site visits, or a full afternoon of work from a lake. Starlink beats a phone hotspot on upload and on data caps.
Sign up in three steps
- Open starlink.com through the referral linkUse tslna.com/go/starlink and enter a Canadian service address. The referral only counts if you order directly on starlink.com, not through a retailer. US readers: the referral does not apply to you, because Starlink requires the referrer and the new customer to be in the same country.
- Pick a planInternet for a house or a cottage: Residential. Internet that travels with the car: Roam, with the Mini. The Mini comes with Roam at no kit charge, or CA$299 to own it. Not sure? Use the two-minute plan finder on my other site.
- Power it from the carThe Tesla USB-C ports cannot run the Mini. Use the 12 V socket in the centre console with a proper USB-C PD to DC cable. My Model Y wiring test shows the exact setup, draw and signal through the windshield.
What you get by ordering Starlink through my referral link
Fall road trips and hunting camp: once you leave the highway the phone goes quiet.
- Same price. Hardware, plan and shipping cost exactly what they cost on starlink.com; the link just tags the order as referred.
- Referral reward. Order through the referral link and Starlink pays you CA$140 (and me the same) once your account has stayed active for two full billing cycles. It lands as a service credit by default; in your Starlink account you can switch it to a cash payout to your bank. Hardware and plan prices are identical to ordering direct.
- How to tell it worked. Open the link, then check the checkout page or your account before paying: a referred order shows the referral reward on the order summary. If it is missing, clear the page and open the link again.
- When it pays out. After your account completes two full monthly billing cycles. The 30-day trial still applies; a refunded order does not count.
| Plan (Canada) | Monthly | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|

| Roam 100GB / 300GB / Unlimited | CA$75 / $110 / $200 | Mini in the car, RV, camping; pause for CA$15/month when idle |

Putting it in the car: three things to get right
The centre console socket supplies 12 V and stays live in Camp mode. Budget 25 to 40 W, about 1 km of range per hour of use.
On the dash, through the windshield, works for parked use. For driving, fix it so it cannot become a projectile and never block the airbag or your view.
Residential is tied to one address. Roam works anywhere in Canada and, on the right plan, across the US border too. Check the plan rules before a cross-border trip.

Short answers to what Tesla owners ask most. Something missing? Email [email protected].
Can readers in the United States use this referral link?
No. Starlink's referral terms require the new customer to activate service at an address in the same country as the referrer, and I am in Canada. US readers can still use everything else on this page; you just order on starlink.com without a referral.
What does the referral actually give me?
CA$140, as cash or service credit, for new Canadian customers who order through the link and keep the service active for two full billing cycles. The referrer gets the same amount. The amount is set by Starlink and can change; the referral page shows the current figure when you open it. My other site explains how to confirm it was applied.
Is Starlink the same thing as Tesla Premium Connectivity?
No. Premium Connectivity is the car's own LTE subscription for maps, streaming and Sentry live view, and it works only where there is cell coverage. Starlink is satellite internet for your laptop, phone and the car's Wi-Fi connection, and it works where LTE does not. Many owners keep both.
Can I use Starlink while the car is moving?
The Mini keeps a connection through the windshield at highway speed in my tests, and Roam plans allow in-motion use. The hard part is mounting: it must be secured, out of the airbag zone and out of your line of sight. Parked use on the dash is the easy case.
How much power does the Mini take from the car?
Typically 25 to 40 W, with peaks around 60 W when it is searching for satellites. From the 12 V socket that is roughly 1 km of range per hour. The USB-C ports in a Tesla cannot supply it; use the 12 V socket with a PD to DC cable.
I have cheap fibre in the city. Do I need this?
For the house, no. Starlink makes sense for a cottage, a rural address, an RV or a car that spends weekends outside coverage. If you only leave the city a few times a year, the 30-day trial and the CA$15 standby pause let you test it without a long commitment.
