Model Y Juniper vs Older Model Y (2026): What Changed, What Didn’t and Should You Upgrade?

Model Y Juniper vs Older Model Y (2026): What Changed, What Didn’t and Should You Upgrade?

The new Model Y, nicknamed “Juniper,” is a real step up in comfort: ventilated front seats, an 8-inch rear screen, power-folding rear seats, a front bumper camera and a quieter, softer ride. What it does not bring is a big jump in range. The 2022 Long Range AWD was rated at 330 miles by the EPA, and the 2026 Long Range AWD is rated at 327. If you own a 2020 to 2024 Model Y that runs well, the upgrade is a want, not a need. If you are shopping used versus new, the gap in features is large enough that it should drive the decision.

Key facts (checked October 25, 2026)

  • The refreshed Model Y launched in North America in January 2025, with deliveries starting in March 2025.
  • EPA range barely moved: 330 miles for the 2022 Long Range AWD, 327 miles for the 2026 Long Range AWD.
  • New on the higher trims: ventilated front seats, 8-inch rear screen, power-folding rear seats, ambient lighting, front bumper camera.
  • The cheapest US trim (Model Y Standard, $39,990) drops the rear screen, Autosteer and power rear seats.
  • In Canada the Model Y starts at $49,990 (Rear-Wheel Drive), and only that trim qualifies for the $5,000 federal EVAP rebate.
  • Every new Model Y has Tesla’s newer AI4 (HW4) computer. Many 2022 and earlier cars have HW3.

I have a personal stake in this one. I ordered my Model Y Long Range straight from tesla.com in January 2022, without a test drive or a store visit, and took delivery in November 2022. It has now been through four Toronto winters. So this is the question I keep asking myself every time a new one parks next to me: is it different enough to switch?

What actually changed: old Model Y vs new Model Y

Tesla unveiled the refresh in China on January 10, 2025, and brought it to the US and Canada on January 23, 2025, starting with a Launch Series priced at US$59,990 and C$84,990 (the Canadian price included FSD at the time), according to Carscoops and Drive Tesla Canada. The shape is familiar, but most of the parts you touch are new.

Feature Older Model Y (2020–2024) New Model Y (2025+, Premium trims)
Front seats Heated only Heated and ventilated
Rear passengers No screen 8-inch touchscreen for climate and media
Rear seat folding Manual release Power fold and power recline
Stalks Two stalks (signals left, gear selector right) One turn-signal stalk; gear selection on the screen
Cameras No front bumper camera Front bumper camera for parking and Summon
Lighting Separate headlights and tail lights Front and rear light bars, wraparound ambient lighting
Ride Firm, especially on 20-inch wheels Retuned suspension, softer and quieter
Self-driving computer HW3 on most early cars, HW4 from about 2023 AI4 (HW4) on every car

Not a Tesla App’s launch breakdown also lists better cellular and Wi-Fi hardware, a stronger Phone Key connection and customizable steering wheel buttons. Reviewers almost all mention the quieter cabin first. Tesla added more acoustic glass, and on the highway the difference is easy to hear.

Range and efficiency: smaller gains than the hype

This is where many owners of older cars are surprised. The new Model Y is more efficient on paper, but Tesla used part of that gain for comfort and wheels rather than more miles. The official numbers on fueleconomy.gov tell the story:

EPA-rated range, Model Y by year (miles)
2022 Long Range AWD330 mi
2024 Long Range AWD310 mi
2026 Long Range AWD327 mi
2026 Standard RWD (18″)321 mi

Scale 0–400 miles. Source: fueleconomy.gov. Tesla’s US configurator now sells the Long Range AWD as “Premium AWD.”

A few things stand out. The 2022 and 2023 Long Range AWD cars carried a higher rating than the 2024 cars, which were re-rated at 310 miles. The new Long Range AWD wins those miles back but does not clearly beat a 2022. Efficiency is a bit better: 27 kWh per 100 miles for the 2026 Long Range AWD against 28 for the 2022, so you spend slightly less on electricity for the same driving.

In Canada, Tesla lists the Premium AWD at 542 km. In real winter driving, the bigger factor is still the heat pump and how you use it, and every Model Y has had a heat pump since launch. Four winters in, my own car’s range in January depends far more on preconditioning while plugged in than on anything the refresh changed.

The trims are not equal: watch out for Model Y Standard

The biggest trap when comparing old and new is assuming every new Model Y has the new features. In the US, the $39,990 Rear-Wheel Drive and $41,990 AWD trims are the stripped Model Y Standard. Drive Tesla Canada’s teardown of the Standard lists what it gives up: no rear screen, no rear heated seats, manual rear seats and steering column, no ambient light strip, seven speakers instead of 15, textile seats, a covered glass roof, no AM/FM radio and no Autosteer.

That last one matters. Every older Model Y came with basic Autopilot, which includes Autosteer. A used 2022 Long Range therefore has driver-assist features that a brand-new Model Y Standard does not. If lane-keeping on the highway is part of why you want a Tesla, compare against the Premium trims, which in the US start at $45,990 (Premium RWD) and $49,990 (Premium AWD), with the Performance at $57,990.

In Canada, the current lineup on tesla.com/en_ca/modely looks like this as of October 5, 2026:

Prices in CAD from Tesla’s Canadian configurator, checked October 5, 2026. All Canadian Model Ys are built in Berlin. Add about $2,650 in freight and fees plus a $250 order fee.

Before you order a Rear-Wheel Drive in Canada, open the configurator and check its feature list line by line. Trim contents change often, and the configurator on the day you order is the only reliable list. Also note that the federal EVAP rebate has a $50,000 price cap, so adding the $1,300 tow hitch pushes the Rear-Wheel Drive over the limit.

FSD and hardware: the gap that will keep growing

If you care about Full Self-Driving (Supervised), the computer in the car matters more than the seats. Every new Model Y ships with AI4 (often called HW4). Many Model Ys built in 2022 and earlier have HW3, and Tesla’s software releases now split the two. With software 2026.27.10 in September, HW3 cars run FSD v14.2 Lite while HW4 cars run v14.3.10, and HW3 is not slated to get unsupervised FSD.

Not sure which one you have? Our guide on how to tell HW3 from HW4 walks through it. In Canada, FSD is now subscription-only at $99 a month, so you no longer lose a big one-time purchase when you sell. That makes it easier to switch cars without feeling you are throwing money away.

If you do decide to order a new one, ordering through a Tesla referral link gives new owners 3 months of free FSD (Supervised). It generally can’t be combined with the new-car FSD trial or other offers; Tesla confirms the final perk on your order. Current and past owners get a vehicle credit instead (US$500 or C$650), not FSD. More details are in our referral code guide.

Should you upgrade from an older Model Y?

Upgrade or keep your older Model Y?

Upgrading makes sense if

  • Your car has HW3 and you want the newest FSD
  • You carry rear passengers often (kids love the rear screen)
  • You find the old ride too stiff or loud on the highway
  • You want ventilated seats for hot summers
  • Your car is near the end of its basic warranty and you planned to sell anyway

Keep what you have if

  • Your car is healthy and paid off
  • Range is your main reason to switch (the gain is small)
  • The new car you can afford would be the Standard trim
  • You mostly drive alone or with one passenger
  • Your trade-in offer is low this season

Money is the honest decider. My 2022’s basic warranty (4 years or 80,000 km in Canada) runs out in November 2026, but the battery and drive unit warranty runs 8 years. That is a reason to think about timing, not a reason to panic. Tesla’s own warranty page lists the terms for each model and year.

On the financing side, the US offer that started September 28, 2026 is 1.99% APR on every Model Y trim except the Performance (3.99%), for up to 72 months. In Canada, Tesla’s default loan is 5.21% APR over 96 months. By my rough math, a $40,000 loan at 5.21% over 96 months costs about $9,000 in interest, so Canadians should compare with their bank or credit union before accepting the default.

Your trade-in value is the other half of the math. Canadian buyers pay HST or GST only on the difference between the new car and the trade, which can be worth a few thousand dollars by itself. Our Tesla trade-in guide explains how to get an estimate and when a private sale beats Tesla’s offer.

Buying used vs new: which older years are still good value?

If you are not upgrading but buying, the question flips. A used older Model Y gives up the comfort features but often costs far less. A few rules of thumb:

  • A 2022 or 2023 Long Range AWD has more EPA range (330 miles) than a 2024 Long Range AWD (310 miles) and almost the same as a new one.
  • Cars built from about 2023 are more likely to have HW4. Check before you pay extra for FSD-related value.
  • Look at the battery warranty mileage. In Canada it is 8 years with 192,000 km on the Premium AWD and Performance and 160,000 km on the Rear-Wheel Drive, and in the US 120,000 miles on Premium and Performance and 100,000 miles on RWD and AWD trims. Older cars carry their original terms.
  • Budget for tires. Many owners find the stock 20-inch wheels wear tires faster and ride harder than the 19-inch set.

Our Model Y price guide for Canada breaks down the new-car price with tax by province, which is the number to hold a used listing against.

Accessories don’t always carry over

One practical surprise for people switching: a lot of interior accessories are not cross-compatible. The new Model Y has a reshaped cabin, a new center console and a different rear floor, so floor mats, console organizers and screen protectors for a 2020 to 2024 car usually do not fit. Sell your old mats with your old car, and look for products that name the 2025+ Model Y (“Juniper”) specifically.

Mats are the one item worth getting right on day one, because the stock carpet soaks up salt and slush quickly in a Canadian winter. The 3D MAXpider all-weather mats for the 2025+ Model Y are laser-measured with high edges that trap meltwater, and they sit at the upper end of the price range. For a budget alternative that still fits properly, the 3W floor mats for the 2025+ Model Y cost noticeably less and cover the main footwells. Either way, double-check the listing says 2025 or newer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Model Y Juniper?

“Juniper” was the internal code name for the refreshed Model Y that Tesla launched in January 2025. Tesla itself just calls it the new Model Y. It has a new front and rear light bar, a quieter and softer ride, ventilated front seats, a rear touchscreen and a front bumper camera on the Premium trims.

Does the new Model Y have more range than the old one?

Only slightly, and not against every older year. The 2026 Long Range AWD is EPA-rated at 327 miles, compared with 330 miles for the 2022 and 2023 Long Range AWD and 310 miles for the 2024. It is a little more efficient, at 27 kWh per 100 miles versus 28.

How can I tell an old Model Y from a new one?

From the front, the new car has a thin light bar across the nose. From behind, it has a full-width light bar. Inside, look for the 8-inch rear screen and the missing right-hand gear stalk.

Does the cheapest new Model Y have Autopilot?

The US Model Y Standard does not include Autosteer, according to Drive Tesla Canada. Older Model Ys and the Premium trims include it. Check the configurator for your trim before ordering.

Can I upgrade my old Model Y to HW4 or add the front camera?

There is no HW4 computer swap or front camera retrofit for older Model Ys that you can book today. Plan around the hardware your car already has.

Do floor mats from my old Model Y fit the new one?

Usually not. The 2025+ Model Y has a different interior layout, so buy mats listed for the 2025 or newer Model Y.

Summary

  • The new Model Y is mainly a comfort upgrade: ventilated seats, rear screen, power rear seats, quieter ride, front camera.
  • Range barely changed: 327 EPA miles for the 2026 Long Range AWD vs 330 for a 2022.
  • The US Model Y Standard drops many new features and Autosteer, so compare older cars against the Premium trims.
  • HW3 owners have the strongest reason to upgrade, because new FSD versions now favour HW4.
  • In Canada, only the $49,990 Rear-Wheel Drive qualifies for the $5,000 EVAP rebate, and Tesla’s default loan is 5.21% APR.
  • Interior accessories like mats usually do not carry over from an older Model Y.
