Tesla tires: how to use them, when to replace them, and how to get through a Canadian winter
A Tesla is heavy and delivers torque instantly, so it eats tires faster than the gas car you had before. Tires are also the only part of the car that touches the road. This hub is written from four Toronto winters on my own Model Y and from the alignment rack at the shop where I work.
- ≈ 50,000 kmtypical life of a set on a Long Range; 30,000 km on a 21-inch Performance
- 3–4 mmwet grip drops noticeably below this tread depth; plan the replacement
- 1.6 mmlegal minimum in Canada (2/32"): replace, no exceptions
- 42 psicold pressure on most Model 3 / Y; the door-jamb label is the source of truth
The tread-depth ruler: where your tires are on it
New tires start around 8–9 mm. Grip does not fall in a straight line: it holds, then drops fast once you are under about 4 mm in the wet and about 3 mm in snow. The legal limit is the floor, not the target.
- 8 mmNewFull grip, full range. Rotate every 10,000 km from day one.
- 6 mmHalf wornStill fine on dry and wet. Check alignment if the inside edge is going faster.
- 4 mmWet grip dropsAquaplaning starts earlier; braking distance in rain grows. Start pricing a new set.
- 3 mmSnow warningTesla itself notes snow performance falls below 3 mm. Winter tires below this are winter tires in name only.
- 1.6 mmLegal limit2/32". Replace immediately; a puncture repair is no longer safe either.
Three ways to measure
The only method that gives you a number. Measure the inner, centre and outer grooves of each tire; a 1 mm difference between inner and outer edges is an alignment signal.
Push a toonie into the groove. Tread reaching the bear's paws: plenty left. Reaching only the silver ring: about half worn. Letters showing: replace.
Insert a quarter head-down. If the top of the head shows, you are near 4/32" (about 3 mm): replace.

Come to the shop where I work for Tesla alignment and tires
XIUCHE is the shop in Markham where I work on cars in my spare time as an Ontario-registered apprentice, and where most of what I know about Tesla tires and suspension comes from. Its main business is Porsche, Mercedes, BMW and Audi; for Teslas it only does wheel alignment and tires, nothing on the battery, motors, high-voltage system or software.
Camber and toe set on a Hunter rig, with a printed before-and-after sheet so you can see exactly what was adjusted.
The car goes up on Tesla-spec lift pads, so nothing presses on the battery pack.
New tires, winter/summer changeovers, nail repairs from the inside when the puncture is repairable, and balancing for a shaky wheel at speed.
Tread depth, uneven wear, bulges and suspension get checked first; anything extra is quoted and only done once you say yes.
Why it matters on a Tesla: the classic failure is inner-edge wear, where the outside of the tire still looks new while the inside is nearly bald. Get the alignment checked if the car pulls, the wheel sits off-centre, you hit a pothole or curb, or after new tires or suspension parts. For comparison, my own Tesla app quoted CA$330 for an alignment in September 2026.

The one tool to keep in the car: a cordless air compressor, not a can of sealant
Most Teslas carry no spare. A nail, a slow leak or the first cold morning of the year all end the same way: you put air back in, then drive to a shop. My pick is the JOWUA cordless compressor: easier to operate, fully wireless, and better built.
JOWUA 100W portable air compressor
- Built-in lithium-ion battery: no 12 V plug, no cable across the door
- USB-C charging, about 30 minutes to full
- Small enough for a door pocket or the frunk; feels well built
- Designed for EV pressures around 42 psi, with a large display
- Comes with a storage case, Presta and needle adapters
US$79.95 on the JOWUA store (checked 2026-10-03). Use code TSLNA at checkout for 5% off.
See it on JOWUA · code TSLNATesla Air Compressor + Tire Repair Kit 3.0
- CA$150 plus tax on the Tesla shop: a 12 V compressor and one bottle of sealant
- The sealant: many Tesla tires have acoustic foam glued inside, and sealant can ruin it. Tesla's own product note says to replace the tire and the TPMS sensor after use, and that neither is covered by warranty
- The compressor: it runs off the 12 V port, and in my hands the buttons were unresponsive and fiddly to operate
Got a nail? Skip the sealant. Pump the tire up, and if it holds, drive gently to a tire shop (in the GTA, the shop where I work). If it loses air fast or the sidewall is cut, call Tesla Roadside.

When does a Tesla need new tires?
Long Range and RWD sets last about 40,000–65,000 km depending on your right foot; a 21-inch Performance set can be done by 30,000 km. Rotate every 10,000 km or the fronts and rears will not reach the same age.
Rubber hardens with time. Replace at 5–6 years even with tread left, sooner if the car lives outside. The last four digits of the DOT code on the sidewall are the build week and year.
Inner-edge wear, a steering wheel that is off-centre, vibration above 100 km/h, or the car following ruts in the road. Most of these are alignment problems that a new set will not fix on its own.
Should I replace now? Say yes to any one of these and the answer is yes:
- Any groove measures under 3 mm, or under 4 mm and winter is coming.
- The tires are more than 6 years old by DOT date.
- A sidewall bulge, cut or repeated slow leak.
- Inner edge worn to the wear bar while the centre still looks fine.
Winter tire rules by province
Only two provinces write winter tires into law, but every province with real winter expects them on a car this heavy. Rules change; check the provincial site before the first snowfall.
| Province | Mandatory? | Period | What counts | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Quebec | Yes, all passenger vehicles | Dec 1 – Mar 15 | 3PMSF (three-peak mountain snowflake) symbol required; M+S alone does not count | Fine roughly $200–300 plus fees |
| British Columbia | Yes, on signed highways | Oct 1 – Mar 31, to Apr 30 on some mountain routes | M+S or 3PMSF, minimum 3.5 mm tread | Most routes outside the Lower Mainland and southern Island; fines apply |
| Ontario | No | — | Insurers must offer a winter tire discount, usually about 5%, when all four are winter tires | Tell your insurer the install date; keep the receipt |
| Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba | No | — | Strongly recommended; some insurers give discounts | Prairie cold hardens all-season rubber fast |
| Atlantic provinces | No | — | Recommended; studded tires allowed in winter months | Freeze–thaw ice is the real enemy |
| Yukon, NWT, Nunavut | No | — | Recommended | Carry a plug kit; service is far away |
US readers: no state mandates winter tires, but Colorado, Washington and California require traction tires or chains on mountain passes under winter conditions. A 3PMSF tire satisfies those rules.
Getting a Tesla through winter
- Four winter tires, never twoMixing grip front and rear on an AWD car with instant torque upsets stability control. Two winter tires is worse than none in a corner.
- 3PMSF, not just M+SM+S is a tread-pattern claim; 3PMSF is a tested snow-traction standard. All-weather tires with the 3PMSF symbol are a fair compromise for Toronto or Vancouver; true winters for Montreal, Calgary or anywhere north.
- A second set of 18-inch wheelsCheaper tires, more sidewall for potholes, and no bead-breaking twice a year. Keep TPMS sensors in both sets so the car does not nag.
- Cold pressure dropsRoughly 1 psi for every 5–6 °C. The first cold morning of November lights up the TPMS warning on most Teslas; top up to the door label, cold.
- Range drops tooAround freezing a Model Y keeps roughly 75–85% of rated range; winter tires cost another few percent. Precondition from the app before you leave and before you Supercharge.
OEM tire sizes by model (check your door label)
| Model / trim | Wheel | Tire size | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Model 3 (18-inch Aero / Photon) | 18" | 235/45R18 | Most common; best range and ride |
| Model 3 (19-inch) | 19" | 235/40R19 or 235/35R19 | Two OEM sizes exist, check the label |
| Model 3 Performance | 20" | Staggered, low profile | No front-rear rotation |
| Model Y 2020–2024 (19-inch Gemini) | 19" | 255/45R19 | Foam-lined OEM tires |
| Model Y 2020–2024 (20-inch Induction) | 20" | 255/40R20 | |
| Model Y Juniper 2025+ / RWD 18-inch Aperture | 18" / 19" / 20" | 235/55R18, 255/45R19 or 255/40R20 | Canada RWD ships on 18-inch |
| Model Y Performance | 21" | Staggered, low profile | Shortest tire life |
What it costs, and what Tesla charges
A set of four installed runs about US$750–1,500 for a Long Range and US$1,200–2,400 for a 21-inch Performance; Canadian prices are similar in dollars plus tax. Buy XL or HL load-rated tires only, and replace in pairs on the same axle at minimum. For reference, my own Model Y's Tesla app quoted CA$85 for a tire rotation and CA$330 for a wheel alignment in September 2026, both before tax; a good independent tire shop does the alignment for roughly half.
Fair prices, lifetime rotation and balancing with the membership; limited sizes.
Everywhere, seasonal swap packages, storage available.
Widest selection and honest reviews; ships to Canada with duties.
Exact OEM match, priciest, mobile service can do tires at your driveway in some areas.

How often should I rotate Tesla tires?
Tesla recommends every 6,250 miles (10,000 km) or whenever the tread-depth difference between front and rear reaches 2/32”. Staggered Performance setups cannot be rotated front to rear.
Why does the tire-pressure warning come on every November?
Air contracts as it cools: pressure drops about 1 psi for every 10°F (roughly 5–6°C). The first cold morning usually pushes a 42 psi tire under the threshold. Top up to the door-label value when the tires are cold; it is rarely a puncture.
Do I need winter tires on a Tesla with AWD?
Yes, if you drive where roads freeze. AWD helps you get going, not stop or turn. All-season rubber hardens below freezing; 3PMSF winter tires keep grip and shorten braking noticeably. Quebec requires winter tires by law from December 1 to March 15.
Can I replace just one tire?
Avoid it on AWD cars. Large tread differences across an axle stress the drive units and upset stability control. Replace in pairs on the same axle, or all four when wear is uneven. Small tread-area punctures can usually be repaired; sidewall damage cannot.
Why does my Tesla wear the inside edge of the rear tires?
Rear camber on Model 3 and Model Y is negative from the factory, and a heavy car with instant torque exaggerates it. Check alignment every 12 months or after any pothole hit; adjustable rear camber arms are the usual fix if the wear is severe.
Does Ontario give an insurance discount for winter tires?
Yes. Since January 2016 Ontario insurers must offer a discount when all four tires are winter tires, typically around 5% of the premium. Tell your insurer the installation date and keep the receipt; some ask for the 3PMSF marking.
Where can I get a Tesla wheel alignment in the Greater Toronto Area?
Tesla service centres do it (my own app quote was CA$330 in September 2026), and so do independent shops with Tesla lift pads. You can also bring it to the shop where I work, XIUCHE in Markham: Hunter alignment with a printed before-and-after sheet, tires and balancing, by appointment at 437-214-5267. It is the shop where I work: transparent, honest, and work I can stand behind.
What tread depth do winter tires need in BC?
At least 3.5 mm on designated winter highways, with an M+S or 3PMSF marking, from October 1 to March 31 and to April 30 on some mountain passes. A worn winter tire under 3.5 mm does not satisfy the rule.
